Self-isolation support payments now available to people on low incomes

A new scheme aimed at removing financial barriers that could prevent people from self-isolating has come into force in Wrexham and across Wales.

Under the Welsh Government’s self-isolation support scheme, people on low-incomes can apply for a £500 payment if they have tested positive for coronavirus or if they have been asked to self-isolate by the NHS Wales Test Trace Protect service.

Recipients of Universal Credit, as well as other specified benefits, will be entitled to apply for support and there will be a discretionary element for those who do not meet the criteria but who face financial hardship as a result of self-isolating.

Wrexham’s Member of the Senedd, Lesley Griffiths, has backed the scheme and said: “Asking people to self-isolate is an important way to break the transmission of the virus but for many people it can mean a loss of income which they can ill afford.

“By introducing the scheme, the Welsh Government is aiming to support people by helping remove the financial barriers faced by those needing to self-isolate.”

Applications for the payment opened on Monday 16 November.  People can apply via Wrexham Council and payments will be backdated to 23 October 2020.
